Seeking Their First CFP Appearance

Once the Rebels earn admittance into the 2025 CFP, it will mark the university's first entry into the highest level of collegiate postseason play. The 2025 surge for the Rebel football program has been led by Kewan Lacy and Trinidad Chambliss. Entering the season as a backup quarterback Chambliss replaced the injured Austin Simmons and never missed a beat. Lacy has powered the Rebels rushing attack and has given the SEC power a multi-dimensional role.

Championship History

While it has been decades since the Ole Miss football program has tasted championship success, the football program does have a national championship legacy. The University of Mississippi football program has one officially recognized national championship, which came in 1960 under legendary coach Johnny Vaught. That season, the Rebels finished 10–0–1 and capped their year with a 14–6 victory over Rice in the Sugar Bowl. Several national selectors, including the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), named Ole Miss national champions.

The Rebels also claim unofficial or retroactive titles in 1959 and 1962, when they fielded dominant teams that finished with top-five national rankings and Sugar Bowl victories. The 1959 team allowed only 21 points all season, and the 1962 squad went perfect at 10–0, marking the school’s only undefeated and untied season. Together, these Vaught-era teams established Ole Miss as one of college football’s elite programs of the late 1950s and early 1960s, a golden age that remains the benchmark for Rebel football success.
